The popular Mirzapur franchise is all set to make its much-awaited transition from streaming to the big screen, and producer Farhan Akhtar has revealed that the biggest driving force behind the decision was the audience itself.
Speaking at the trailer launch of Mirzapur: The Movie, Akhtar said the film came into existence largely because of the continued love and demand from fans of the hit Prime Video series. According to him, audiences repeatedly wanted more from the Mirzapur universe, eventually encouraging the makers to explore a theatrical version.
The decision represents a major step for the franchise, which became one of India’s most popular streaming shows through its three seasons. The series developed a massive following around characters such as Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit, Munna Tripathi and Golu Gupta, making the prospect of seeing the world of Mirzapur on the big screen particularly exciting for fans.
Akhtar, who is producing the film with Ritesh Sidhwani under Excel Entertainment, has previously described the theatrical adaptation as a landmark moment for the franchise. The film is directed by Gurmmeet Singh, who has also been associated with the Mirzapur series.
The movie brings back several familiar faces from the original series, including Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu and Shweta Tripathi Sharma. Jitendra Kumar has also joined the cast, adding a new element to the Mirzapur universe.
The makers are also attempting to ensure that the film works beyond the existing fan base. Actor Ali Fazal, who reprises his role as Guddu Pandit, has said that Mirzapur: The Movie has been designed as a standalone cinematic experience, meaning audiences who have not watched the series can also follow and enjoy the story.
The theatrical format is expected to give the franchise a larger scale, with the familiar crime drama, action and intense character conflicts being brought to cinemas. The film’s move from individual OTT viewing to a shared theatrical experience could also give longtime fans a completely different way to experience the Mirzapur world.
Mirzapur: The Movie is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on September 4, 2026. With the original cast returning and the film being driven by years of fan demand, expectations are high for the franchise’s first big-screen outing.
For Farhan Akhtar and the Mirzapur team, the film is more than simply another chapter in the franchise—it is an attempt to take a world created for streaming audiences and give its loyal fan base the opportunity to experience it together on the big screen.
