Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has urged Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren to personally meet students protesting in Ranchi over alleged irregularities in the state’s recruitment examinations.
In a letter to Soren dated August 17, Gandhi said the concerns raised by the protesting students deserved to be heard and addressed through dialogue. He described the right to peaceful protest as an important pillar of democracy and expressed solidarity with the students.
Rahul Gandhi Urges Direct Dialogue
Gandhi said he was aware that the Jharkhand government had already held discussions with representatives of the protesting students and that several of their demands had been agreed upon. However, he noted that the agitation was continuing and that some students had also begun an indefinite hunger strike.
The Congress leader suggested that Soren meet the student representatives personally to understand their remaining concerns and demonstrate the government’s commitment to resolving the matter.
Recruitment Exam Controversy
The protests have centred on allegations of irregularities in Jharkhand’s recruitment examinations. Students have been demanding action over issues surrounding the examination process and greater transparency in government recruitment.
The demonstrations had earlier seen clashes between protesters and police, with authorities reporting the use of water cannons, tear gas and a mild lathi-charge after some protesters breached barricades. Police also reported injuries among their personnel.
Gandhi Raises Wider Concerns Over Education
In his letter, Gandhi also referred to reports of paper leaks and irregularities affecting examinations across the country. He argued that India’s education system should serve as a means of learning and opportunity rather than becoming a source of exploitation or harassment for students.
He emphasised that young people represent India’s future and said their grievances should be treated with seriousness and respect.
Government Moves To Address Protest
The development comes as the Hemant Soren government has taken steps to address the students’ concerns. On August 17, the Jharkhand Cabinet decided to cancel the JSSC-CGL examination amid the continuing protests. Soren also said that mistakes and irregularities dating back to 2014 would be investigated.
By August 18, the students’ hunger strike had also ended following an understanding with the state government. Rahul Gandhi welcomed the development, calling the peaceful resolution of the dispute the right approach.
Gandhi’s intervention comes against the backdrop of the Congress and Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha being political allies. His appeal to the Chief Minister reflects the pressure on the state government to address the concerns of protesting youth while maintaining dialogue and public confidence in the recruitment process.
