A legal dispute involving singer Sonu Nigam and his namesake, Sonu Nigam Singh, has come to an end after the parties reached a settlement before the Bombay High Court.
Justice Madhav Jamdar recorded the settlement on August 13, 2026, after lawyers for both sides informed the court that the matter had been resolved amicably. The court accepted the consent terms as undertakings and disposed of the commercial intellectual property suit.
Dispute Over Use of Sonu Nigam’s Name
The singer had approached the Bombay High Court seeking protection of his personality and publicity rights. His lawsuit alleged that Sonu Nigam Singh was using the name “Sonu Nigam” on social media in a manner that could create confusion among the public.
The plea sought restrictions on the unauthorised use of the singer’s name, photograph, image, likeness and other elements associated with his personality. It also raised concerns that the social media account could be mistaken for an account belonging to, or endorsed by, the popular singer.
Earlier Court Order
The dispute dates back to 2025, when the Bombay High Court passed an ad-interim order restraining Sonu Nigam Singh from using “Sonu Nigam” as a display or account name on social media platforms.
The court had, however, clarified that Singh could use his complete name, “Sonu Nigam Singh”, on social media, provided it did not result in misrepresentation, confusion or deception among members of the public.
The court had also observed that the singer’s name had acquired significant distinctiveness because of his long career, reputation and celebrity status.
Terms of the Settlement
Under the settlement, Sonu Nigam Singh has agreed not to use or exploit the singer’s personality and publicity rights through the use of the name “Sonu Nigam” as a standalone username or handle on X.
The undertaking also covers the unauthorised use of the singer’s photograph, image, likeness and other personality attributes for commercial or personal gain, as well as through social media, advertisements, publications and promotional material.
Singh can continue using the social media handle “@SonuNigamSingh”, subject to compliance with the settlement terms. He has also agreed not to represent his account or services as being connected with, originating from or endorsed by the singer.
Court Brings Dispute to an End
The parties confirmed before Justice Jamdar that they had agreed to settle the matter. The court recorded the consent terms as undertakings and formally disposed of the suit.
The settlement brings an end to the year-long legal dispute and reinforces the importance of personality and publicity rights in the digital space, particularly where the use of a celebrity’s name or identity could potentially mislead the public.
