Bollywood actors Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan have revisited one of the most frightening experiences of their lives, opening up about the knife attack on Saif at their Mumbai residence in January 2025. Appearing together on the latest episode of Karan Johar’s talk show Koffee With Karan Season 9, the couple recalled the terrifying night, their children’s reactions and the emotional impact the incident had on their family.
One of the most heartbreaking moments shared by Kareena was the question their elder son, Taimur Ali Khan, asked his father after seeing him seriously injured. Recalling the moment, Kareena revealed that Taimur looked at Saif and asked, “Abba, are you going to die?”
Kareena Recalls Rushing to Find Help
Describing the immediate aftermath of the attack, Kareena said she was in shock after seeing Saif bleeding. She recalled running onto the road in her nightwear to find an autorickshaw to take her husband to the hospital.
“I was screaming on the road. I was like, ‘Stop, stop.’ It was like a movie scene. I didn’t have the time to put on my pyjamas,” she recalled during the conversation.
Kareena also remembered seeing Saif inside the lift and desperately asking him not to give up. She said the situation was extremely frightening as Saif was bleeding and needed immediate medical attention.
The actor was eventually taken to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai, accompanied by Taimur and their household help, Hari.
Saif Says He Fought to Protect His Son Jeh
Saif explained that his reaction during the attack was driven by an instinct to protect his younger son, Jehangir Ali Khan, popularly known as Jeh. The intruder was reportedly standing over the child with a knife when Saif confronted him.
The actor said the situation unfolded rapidly and that he was outraged to see someone threatening his son. He also reflected on how fortunate he was to survive the incident.
Saif revealed that he sustained deep, jagged wounds during the confrontation. A piece of the broken knife remained lodged in his back, dangerously close to his spine.
Describing the weapon, he jokingly called it the worst knife in history, explaining that the blade broke during the attack. He suggested that if the knife had been stronger, the consequences could have been fatal.
Ibrahim and Jeh Were Deeply Affected
The couple also spoke about how their children dealt with the frightening experience. Saif recalled that his elder son, Ibrahim Ali Khan, was extremely emotional when he saw him after surgery.
He said Ibrahim was in tears and appeared angry, wanting to defend the family and catch the attacker.
Kareena also shared a touching detail about Jeh’s reaction. After the incident, the younger child gave his father a plastic sword, telling him to use it if the thief returned. Saif said Jeh now considers him a great protector.
Kareena Says the Incident Affected Her for Months
While Saif remained relatively composed during his recovery, Kareena admitted that the experience had a lasting emotional impact on her. She revealed that she struggled to sleep properly for nearly six months following the attack.
The couple also addressed the conspiracy theories that circulated on social media after the incident. Kareena expressed disappointment over the speculation, particularly the questions surrounding how Saif was taken to the hospital and the circumstances of the attack.
Saif underwent emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital after sustaining multiple stab injuries. He was discharged five days later.
The couple’s appearance on Koffee With Karan offered a deeply personal account of an incident that changed their family’s sense of security. Their recollections highlighted not only the seriousness of the attack but also the fear, courage and emotional strength involved in navigating the aftermath.
