Bollywood actor Imran Khan, nephew of actor Aamir Khan, has been issued a notice directing him to leave India by October 28, 2026, following his participation in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Mumbai. The notice was issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) after a complaint raised questions about the actor’s participation in the demonstration as a foreign national.
The protest took place on October 10 at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan, where demonstrators demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Imran Khan was among those detained by Mumbai Police during the demonstration and was subsequently released.
The development followed a complaint by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who approached the police seeking action against the actor over his involvement in the protest. Somaiya alleged that Khan’s participation violated the rules governing foreign nationals and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders.
Khan is reportedly an American citizen and holds an OCI card, which allows eligible foreign citizens of Indian origin to live in India under specified conditions. Authorities have cited his foreign citizenship and participation in the demonstration as the basis for the action.
According to media reports, the notice was issued under the relevant provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. The legislation provides a framework for regulating the entry and stay of foreign nationals in India. However, the precise legal grounds cited in Khan’s notice have not been fully disclosed publicly.
The actor had previously explained his presence at the protest by referring to his connection with Mumbai and expressing concerns about restrictions on people’s movement and their ability to voice opinions.
The notice has brought renewed attention to the rules governing political participation by foreign nationals in India, as well as the legal questions surrounding the rights and obligations of OCI cardholders.
Imran Khan has until October 28 to comply with the notice. The development is expected to draw further attention as details of the order and any potential legal challenge emerge.
