New Delhi, October 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchaar on Friday to enquire about his health and commend his actions during a serious emergency aboard a flydubai aircraft. The captain is recovering after being injured in an alleged attack by his co-pilot during a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
During their conversation, Machchaar recounted the frightening experience and explained what gave him the strength to respond despite his injuries. The Prime Minister appreciated his courage, quick thinking and determination, and wished him a speedy recovery.
Modi had earlier praised the pilot for putting the safety of others ahead of his own life. He said Machchaar’s actions helped prevent a potentially devastating incident and brought pride to the country. The Prime Minister had also spoken with the pilot’s parents and wife to enquire about his condition.
The incident occurred on Wednesday aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 passengers, including 27 children. The aircraft reportedly experienced a sudden descent from around 34,000 feet after the cockpit confrontation. It subsequently diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it made an emergency landing.
According to reports, Machchaar was injured during the confrontation but managed to open the cockpit door. This enabled passengers and crew members to intervene, while other pilots aboard the aircraft took control and brought the flight to safety.
The captain is receiving medical treatment in the United Arab Emirates. Indian diplomatic officials have said that his condition is stable and that he is recovering under medical supervision.
The conversation with Modi has drawn attention to the pilot’s response under extreme pressure and the efforts that helped protect the passengers and crew during the incident.
