Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt recently brought back his iconic Munna Bhai persona for a humorous and satirical appearance on Shekhar Suman’s show Shekhar Tonite. During the Gandhi Jayanti special episode, Dutt imagined himself as India’s Prime Minister and used the character’s trademark style to comment on politics, peace and international affairs.
One of the highlights of his monologue was his reference to US President Donald Trump. Calling him “Trump Mamu”, Dutt joked that the American leader needed to learn a little “Gandhigiri” — a philosophy inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and popularised through the Munna Bhai films.
Dutt said that peace comes through love and suggested that conflicts should be addressed through dialogue rather than threats. In his characteristic Munna Bhai style, he humorously suggested sending a bouquet instead of a missile and inviting people for tea to resolve disagreements.
The actor also spoke about the importance of peace in India, saying that he could no longer feel the same sense of peace in the country that he remembered from earlier times. He described Indians as welcoming and large-hearted and expressed hope that those days would return.
His imagined speech also touched on political imagery and public spaces. Dutt joked that if he became Prime Minister, he would reduce the use of his own photographs and instead promote images and ideas associated with Mahatma Gandhi.
The performance drew attention online because of its combination of humour, political satire and nostalgia for the Munna Bhai character. Dutt’s “Gandhigiri” reference echoed the central message of Lage Raho Munna Bhai, where Gandhi’s principles of non-violence, dialogue and compassion are presented as alternatives to confrontation.
Dutt ended the Trump segment in classic Munna Bhai fashion, joking that he would head to America to give the US President a “jaadu ki jhappi”, keeping the tone firmly rooted in the character’s message of peace and reconciliation.
