Mondal was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday night, accused of misleading the investigation and tampering with evidence. His arrest follows an internal review by CBI officials after discrepancies were found in the case diary maintained by the city police.
On the same day, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College, who had previously been arrested for financial irregularities at the institution and is currently in judicial custody, was also shown as “arrested” in connection with the rape and murder case.
According to sources familiar with the developments, after noticing errors in the police case diary, CBI officers summoned Mondal for interrogation on Saturday afternoon. They believed these flaws could have seriously misled the investigation and were of the type that could warrant a departmental probe into Mondal’s conduct.
Mondal was subjected to a marathon seven-hour interrogation, during which CBI officials noted several inconsistencies in his account, particularly regarding the timeline of procedures that should have been followed after the victim’s body was discovered in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar, which falls under Tala Police Station’s jurisdiction.
Mondal had been in charge of the Tala Police Station when the junior doctor’s body was found on the morning of August 9. However, he was recently removed from his position by the city police.
Both Mondal and Ghosh will be presented in a special court in Kolkata on Sunday, where the CBI is expected to seek their custody.
With these arrests, the total number of people taken into custody in the rape and murder case has risen to three. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, is already in judicial custody after being arrested earlier by the city police and subsequently handed over to the CBI.
