A heartbreaking tragedy has left a family in Andhra Pradesh mourning after Indian marine engineer Patnala Suresh was among three Indian seafarers killed in a United States military strike on the oil tanker MT Settebello near the Gulf of Oman. The incident has sparked diplomatic tensions between India and the United States and raised concerns about the safety of Indian sailors working in conflict-prone maritime regions.
According to family members, Suresh had spoken to his wife shortly before the attack and reassured her that he would return home safely. During their final conversation, he expressed his desire to reunite with his family and celebrate future milestones together. His wife recalled that he remained hopeful despite growing tensions in the region and never imagined the voyage would end in tragedy.
The 44-year-old engineer from Visakhapatnam had nearly two decades of maritime experience and was serving as chief engineer aboard the Palau-flagged tanker. Reports indicate that he was carrying out duties near the vessel’s engine section when the strike occurred.
The MT Settebello, carrying a crew that included 24 Indian nationals, came under attack as part of a US operation targeting vessels allegedly linked to Iranian oil shipments. US authorities stated that the tanker had failed to comply with warnings issued before the strike. However, the vessel’s management has disputed those claims and called for an independent investigation into the incident.
Alongside Suresh, two other Indian crew members—deck cadet Aditya Sharma from Himachal Pradesh and engine fitter Shivanand Chaurasia from Uttar Pradesh—also lost their lives. Twenty-one other Indian sailors were rescued following the attack.
The Indian government has lodged a strong diplomatic protest with Washington over the deaths and has called for an end to attacks on commercial vessels carrying civilian crews. The Ministry of External Affairs summoned senior US diplomatic officials to express India’s deep concern over the incident and to seek accountability.
Back in Visakhapatnam, grief has engulfed Suresh’s family and community. Relatives described him as a dedicated professional and loving family man who worked tirelessly to provide a better future for his wife and children. What was meant to be another routine voyage ended in a tragedy that has left an irreplaceable void in their lives.
As India continues to seek answers, the final words Suresh shared with his wife—promising that he would return home safely—have become a painful reminder of the human cost of escalating conflicts at sea.
