Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said that protests against the Election Commission of India will continue until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigns, escalating the opposition’s criticism of the poll panel.
Gandhi has repeatedly accused the Election Commission of failing to adequately address concerns raised by opposition parties over electoral rolls and the conduct of elections. He has alleged that irregularities in voter lists have affected the fairness and credibility of the electoral process.
Speaking about the ongoing campaign, Gandhi maintained that the Congress and its allies would continue raising the issue until the Election Commission responds to their concerns. He has also called for greater transparency in the preparation and revision of electoral rolls.
The Congress has particularly focused on allegations of discrepancies in voter lists, including claims of duplicate entries and questionable registrations. The Election Commission has rejected allegations of systematic manipulation and has maintained that electoral rolls are prepared according to established procedures and legal safeguards.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who took charge of the Election Commission in February 2025, has faced increasing criticism from opposition parties over several election-related issues. The poll body has defended its decisions and challenged political parties to provide specific evidence to support allegations of wrongdoing.
The dispute has become part of a wider political confrontation between the ruling BJP and opposition parties over the credibility and independence of India’s electoral institutions. While the opposition has demanded greater accountability from the Election Commission, the government and the poll panel have rejected claims that elections are being systematically manipulated.
Rahul Gandhi’s latest remarks indicate that the Congress intends to keep the issue at the centre of its political campaign. With protests continuing, the confrontation between the opposition and the Election Commission is likely to remain a major political issue in the coming days.
