Indian javelin thrower Ashish Yadav clinched the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships, giving India its first medal of the competition.
The 19-year-old produced a best throw of 74.09 metres to finish second in the final. South Africa’s Jan-Hendrik Heymans won gold with a world U20-leading throw of 80.50m, while Dominica’s Addison James claimed bronze with 73.89m.
Following Neeraj Chopra’s Footsteps
Yadav’s achievement has particular significance for Indian athletics. He became only the second Indian athlete to win a men’s javelin medal at the World Athletics U20 Championships, following Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra.
Chopra won gold at the 2016 World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, where he set the still-standing world U20 record of 86.48m. Yadav’s silver comes exactly a decade after Chopra’s historic triumph.
