Oct 09 – Afghanistan’s cricket star, Rashid Khan, has made a generous commitment during the ongoing ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. He has pledged to donate his entire match fee to aid the victims of the recent earthquakes that struck Afghanistan, claiming the lives of at least 2,445 people.
Rashid Khan, renowned as an all-rounder and the highest-paid player in his nation, intends to go beyond this gesture. He plans to initiate a fundraising campaign to provide further support to those affected by this tragic event.
Expressing his sorrow on Instagram, Rashid Khan stated, “I learned with great sadness about the tragic consequences of the earthquake that struck the western provinces (Herat, Farah, and Badghis) of Afghanistan. I am donating all of my #CWC23 match fees to help the affected people. Soon, we will be launching a fundraising campaign to call upon those who can support the people in need.”
In their opening match of the World Cup held at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, Afghanistan faced a defeat at the hands of Bangladesh. Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bowl first, restricting Afghanistan to a modest total of 156 runs in 37.2 overs, with Mehidy Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan taking three wickets each. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the top scorer for Afghanistan, contributing 47 runs off 62 deliveries, while Azmathullah Omarzai added 22 runs. Bangladesh’s Najmul Hossain Shanto played an outstanding innings, scoring an unbeaten half-century with 59 runs, and Mehidy Hasan also achieved a fifty with his 57-run performance.
