Indian women’s cricket team opener and vice-captain Shafali Verma has received an official reprimand from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching its Code of Conduct during the second Women’s T20 International against Zimbabwe in Raipur on October 18, 2026. The 22-year-old was also handed one demerit point for her on-field conduct.
The incident occurred during Zimbabwe’s innings when Verma dropped a catch and threw the ball onto the ground in frustration. Although India went on to secure a convincing victory, the incident resulted in disciplinary action from the ICC.
What Led to the ICC Action?
The incident took place in the 12th over of Zimbabwe’s innings. Verma was fielding at mid-off when Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano offered a catching opportunity off the bowling of Sree Charani. Verma failed to hold on to the catch and subsequently threw the ball into the ground in frustration.
The ICC determined that her reaction violated Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This provision deals with the abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an international match.
The charge was brought by the match officials, including on-field umpires Vrinda Rathi and Gayathri Venugopalan, third umpire Anna Harris, and fourth umpire Janani Narayanan.
Verma admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee G.S. Lakshmi of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. As a result, no formal hearing was required.
What Is the Punishment for the Code of Conduct Breach?
Under the ICC’s disciplinary rules, Level 1 offences carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of a fine amounting to 50 per cent of a player’s match fee. Such breaches can also attract one or two demerit points.
The demerit point awarded to Verma marks her first disciplinary offence in a 24-month period. These points remain on a player’s record for 24 months. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points during this period, they are converted into suspension points, potentially resulting in a ban from international matches.
Shafali Verma Shines With the Bat Despite the Incident
Despite the disciplinary setback, Verma delivered an impressive performance with the bat in the same match. She scored an unbeaten 55 off just 25 deliveries, helping India chase down Zimbabwe’s target of 103 runs with nine wickets to spare.
Zimbabwe struggled against India’s bowling attack and finished with 102/8. India then completed the chase comfortably, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series.
Verma’s half-century was a significant contribution to India’s victory and demonstrated her ability to bounce back with the bat despite the disappointment of the dropped catch.
India Look Ahead to the Final T20I
The third and final T20I between India and Zimbabwe is scheduled for October 20 in Raipur. With the series already secured, India will look to maintain their winning momentum, while Zimbabwe will aim to finish the tour on a positive note.
For Verma, the focus will be on continuing her strong batting form while ensuring that frustration on the field does not lead to further disciplinary action.
The incident serves as a reminder that international players are expected to maintain professional conduct throughout a match. While competitive cricket naturally involves pressure and disappointment, the ICC Code of Conduct requires players to manage their reactions and respect the equipment and standards of the game.
