Delhi, November 4: India achieved an unprecedented victory over Sri Lanka by a stunning margin of 302 runs in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, the biggest ever win in the history of the tournament. Notably, Mohammed Shami and Virat Kohli performed exceptionally well for India. Shami performed brilliantly by taking five wickets while Kohli made an important contribution by scoring a century.
Kohli’s remarkable century took him to fourth place in the all-time list of World Cup run-scorers, with a total of 1472 runs. Now he is behind cricket greats like Sachin Tendulkar (2278), Ricky Ponting (1743) and Kumar Sangakkara (1532). Kohli’s latest century also marked his 13th 50-plus score in the World Cup, making him second only to Tendulkar (21) in all editions of the tournament.
India’s historic win produced a dominant display of both batting and bowling skills. They bowled out Sri Lanka for just 221 runs and easily achieved the target in just 26 overs. The win further strengthened India’s position at the top of the Group A table.
Shami’s extraordinary performance achieved many important milestones. He became the first bowler to take four wickets seven times in the World Cup, surpassing Mitchell Starc (6) and Imran Tahir (5). Additionally, he tied the record with Starc for most five-wicket hauls in the World Cup (three). Shami also left behind Harbhajan Singh and Javagal Srinath in making the record of taking most five wickets in ODI for India, reaching a total of four wickets. His achievement of becoming India’s leading wicket-taker in the Men’s Cricket World Cup with 45 wickets in just 14 matches is truly remarkable. Notably, his striking average of 12.91 is a testament to his exceptional skills and unwavering consistency as a bowler.
Shami’s achievement is particularly impressive as he took most of his wickets in challenging conditions. He has contributed significantly to India’s bowling attack in some of their most important wins in recent times. Furthermore, he has emerged as one of the most successful bowlers in Cricket World Cup history, with only seven bowlers taking more wickets than him.
