In a recent interview on The ICC Review, former India head coach Ravi Shastri disclosed a private conversation he had with Virat Kohli a week before the latter’s unexpected retirement from Test cricket. Kohli, who announced his decision on May 12, conveyed to Shastri that he had “given everything” to the game and felt it was the right time to step away.
Shastri recounted, “There were no regrets. There were one or two questions I asked, and that’s a personal conversation which, you know, he mentioned very clearly, there were no doubts in his mind, which made me think, ‘Yes, the time is right.’ The mind has told his body that it’s time to go.”
Kohli’s retirement comes just ahead of India’s five-Test tour of England in June. He departs as one of India’s most accomplished Test batsmen, amassing 9,230 runs and 30 centuries over 123 matches. Under his captaincy from 2014 to 2022, India secured 40 Test victories, making him the country’s most successful Test skipper.
Shastri also reflected on the mental toll of Kohli’s intense approach to the game, suggesting that such passion, while admirable, can lead to burnout. He noted that Kohli’s unwavering commitment and the constant spotlight may have contributed to his decision to retire.
Kohli’s departure from Test cricket marks the end of a significant era for Indian cricket, especially following the recent retirement of fellow stalwart Rohit Sharma. The Indian team now faces a period of transition as it prepares for upcoming challenges without two of its most influential players.
