Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has criticised Barcelona over their pursuit of Argentine striker Julián Álvarez, accusing the Catalan club of failing to handle the transfer saga appropriately.
Cerezo, speaking ahead of Atlético Madrid’s LaLiga clash with Villarreal, reiterated that Álvarez was never intended to be sold and insisted that the forward remains an Atlético player. He also suggested that Barcelona had not met the standards expected during their attempts to negotiate the transfer.
Atlético Never Intended to Sell Alvarez
Cerezo maintained that Álvarez has always been an important part of Atlético’s plans. Despite the striker’s reported desire to leave during the summer and Barcelona’s interest, the Madrid club repeatedly refused to negotiate his departure.
The Atlético president also expressed confidence that Álvarez can win back the support of the club’s fans. Earlier this month, Cerezo said he expected the Argentine to have a strong season and earn the supporters’ backing quickly.
Barcelona’s Pursuit Falls Short
Barcelona had identified Álvarez as a major target as they looked to strengthen their attack. Club president Joan Laporta confirmed that Barcelona had made what he described as a significant offer for the striker and hoped Atlético would consider it.
However, Atlético remained firm on their position. Cerezo’s latest comments indicate that the Spanish club believes Barcelona did not do enough to make the transfer happen, with the president saying the Catalan side had not been “at the height of the circumstances.”
Alvarez Set to Continue at Atlético
With the transfer saga appearing to have reached its conclusion, Álvarez is expected to remain at Atlético Madrid. The striker has been included in the club’s plans for the new season, while Atlético continue to view him as a key player for Diego Simeone.
Cerezo’s comments underline Atlético’s determination to keep their star forward and close the door on Barcelona’s pursuit, at least for the current transfer window.
