Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa has stormed into the final of the 2026 Grand Chess Tour Finals after a dominant semifinal victory over Germany’s Vincent Keymer.
Praggnanandhaa defeated Keymer 19-9 in the semifinal, securing his place in the title clash at the Saint Louis Chess Club. He built a commanding lead by winning the second classical game and then taking both rapid games.
The Indian star will now face Fabiano Caruana of the United States, the defending champion, in the final. Caruana defeated Wesley So 18-12 in the other semifinal to set up the much-anticipated showdown.
Praggnanandhaa’s Dominant Run
Praggnanandhaa began his semifinal with a draw against Keymer in the opening classical game before winning the second classical encounter. That gave him a crucial six-point advantage heading into the rapid section.
He then produced an impressive performance in rapid, winning both games to establish an unassailable lead. Although Keymer fought back in the remaining blitz games, Praggnanandhaa had already done enough to secure his place in the final.
Caruana Stands in His Way
Caruana had a tougher semifinal against Wesley So but eventually prevailed 18-12. The American grandmaster, who won the Grand Chess Tour Finals last year, will now look to defend his title.
For Praggnanandhaa, the final represents an opportunity to claim his first Grand Chess Tour Finals title.
The championship match is scheduled to begin on August 25 at 10:30 PM IST, with the first game being played under classical time control.
With two of the world’s elite grandmasters facing each other, the Praggnanandhaa-Caruana final promises to be one of the biggest chess showdowns of the year.
