Defending champion Ousmane Dembélé, Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane and Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal are among the biggest names on the 30-player shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with the race for football’s most prestigious individual award set for a thrilling finish.
The nominees were announced by France Football on Tuesday, with the winner set to be revealed at a ceremony in London on October 26.
Dembélé Looking To Retain Crown
Dembélé enters the race as the defending champion after another hugely successful campaign with Paris Saint-Germain. The French forward helped PSG win a second consecutive Champions League title and is among a remarkable group of 10 PSG players included in the 30-man shortlist.
Dembélé has suggested that the award could remain in Paris, naming PSG teammates and other leading stars among his favourites.
Kane Enjoys Remarkable Season
Harry Kane is also considered one of the strongest contenders after a prolific campaign with Bayern Munich and England.
The England striker scored 73 goals for club and country and helped Bayern secure the Bundesliga title. He also led England to a third-place finish at the 2026 World Cup.
Kane’s extraordinary individual numbers have placed him firmly among the leading candidates.
Mbappé And Yamal In The Race
Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé is another major contender. The French star continued his remarkable scoring form and added another major international achievement by becoming the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.
Meanwhile, Lamine Yamal has emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest young stars. The Barcelona forward was instrumental in Spain’s World Cup triumph and remains one of the leading contenders despite his young age.
Messi And Haaland Also Nominated
Eight-time winner Lionel Messi has also made the shortlist. The Argentine veteran helped Inter Miami win the MLS title and guided Argentina to the World Cup final.
Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior, Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Spain midfielder Rodri are among the other notable names on the list.
One major absentee is Cristiano Ronaldo, who failed to make the shortlist despite winning the Saudi Pro League with Al-Nassr.
Award To Be Decided In London
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place in London on October 26, marking the 70th edition of the award and honouring its first winner, Stanley Matthews. The winner will be determined through voting by journalists from the world’s top 100 FIFA-ranked nations.
With Dembélé seeking back-to-back titles and Kane, Mbappé, Yamal, Messi and Haaland all in contention, the 2026 race is shaping up as one of the most competitive Ballon d’Or contests in recent years.
