New York, Sep 12: Broward County in Florida has officially declared November as Hindu Heritage Month, recognizing Hinduism as one of the oldest and largest religions in the world. The move connects Broward County with several other US states, including Georgia, Texas, Ohio, and Massachusetts, to celebrate Hindu heritage, culture, values, and traditions. November holds special significance for Hindus as it coincides with the festival of lights, Diwali, which is celebrated on the 12th of the month this year. The resolution passed by the county underlines Diwali as a time of peace, happiness, and new beginnings, including lighting oil lamps, setting off fireworks, and distributing sweets, especially among children.
The Coalition of Hindus of North America (COHNA) welcomed this recognition, emphasizing that it not only acknowledges Hinduism’s status as one of the world’s oldest religions, but also its diverse traditions. With Florida hosting a large Indian population, this declaration acknowledges the cultural importance and contributions of the Hindu community.
