Sep 5 – Nabih Berri, the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, has urged political parties to begin talks to settle the presidential election impasse in September.
Lebanon has been without a president since previous President Michel Aoun’s tenure expired in October of last year, according to the Xinhua news agency.
So far, the parliament has convened 12 election sessions but has not chosen a president because neither of the two main blocs – Hezbollah and its supporters or their opponents – has a majority.
“We should be able to resolve this crisis by September.” “I believe that electing a president of the republic in September is everyone’s responsibility,” Berri stated in an interview with the daily al-Joumhouriya on Monday.
He went on to say that he had asked for a seven-day conversation and that, regardless of the outcome, he would hold open sessions until a President was elected.
Lebanon, which has been suffering from an unparalleled financial crisis, urgently needs to pick a President and create a new cabinet in order to undertake vital reforms and put the country back on track.
