President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday congratulated Indian athletes Gulveer Singh and Harjinder Kaur for their outstanding performances at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, where both clinched silver medals and brought glory to the nation. She praised the duo for their determination, resilience, and remarkable achievements on the international stage.
President Congratulates Historic Achievements
In a message shared through the official Rashtrapati Bhavan account on X, President Murmu lauded long-distance runner Gulveer Singh for scripting history by becoming the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 10,000m event.
“Hearty congratulations to Gulveer Singh on your splendid achievement! By winning the Silver Medal in the Men’s 10,000m race at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, you have earned India its first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 10,000m event. The nation is proud of you. I wish you many more laurels in future,” the President said.
Harjinder Kaur Earns Praise
President Murmu also congratulated weightlifter Harjinder Kaur for securing silver in the women’s 69kg weightlifting event.
“Heartiest congratulations to Harjinder Kaur on clinching the Silver Medal in the Women’s 69kg weightlifting event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. You have made India proud with your spirited performance. May you continue to scale new heights of success,” she said.
Gulveer Creates History in Athletics
Gulveer Singh delivered a memorable performance in the men’s 10,000m final, clocking 27:49.78 to finish second behind Australia’s Ky Robinson. Battling rainy conditions in Glasgow, the Army athlete stayed with the leading pack before producing a powerful final-lap sprint to secure a historic silver medal.
His podium finish marked India’s first-ever medal in the men’s 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games, ending a long wait for success in the event.
Harjinder Sets Personal Best
Harjinder Kaur opened India’s medal tally for the day with an impressive performance in the women’s 69kg weightlifting competition. The Punjab lifter registered a career-best total of 227kg, lifting 101kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk to secure the silver medal.
She also rewrote the Commonwealth Games snatch record twice during the competition and improved upon the bronze medal she had won at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
India’s Campaign Gains Momentum
The twin silver medals further strengthened India’s campaign at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Alongside the medal-winning performances, Indian boxing also enjoyed a successful day, with three boxers advancing to the semifinals and guaranteeing at least three more medals for the country.
