Mumbai: Indian stock markets came under pressure on Monday as elevated crude oil prices and continued geopolitical tensions in the Middle East kept investors cautious. The weakness extended the market’s losing streak from the previous week.
The Nifty 50 declined around 0.34% to 24,282.45, while the BSE Sensex fell 0.46% to 77,647 by 9:35 a.m. IST. Nine of the 16 major sectoral indices were trading in negative territory, while small- and mid-cap stocks remained largely stable.
Crude Oil Prices Remain a Major Concern
One of the biggest concerns for Indian investors continues to be rising crude oil prices. Brent crude was trading close to $89 per barrel, gaining around 0.5% during early trading.
The increase has been linked to continued tensions between the United States and Iran. Higher crude prices are particularly important for India because the country depends heavily on imported oil, making the economy and corporate earnings sensitive to energy costs.
Limited Domestic Triggers
With the quarterly earnings season largely over, investors have fewer domestic corporate developments to influence market direction. Analysts say geopolitical developments and movements in crude oil are therefore playing a greater role in determining near-term market sentiment.
Several Stocks Under Pressure
A number of individual stocks also witnessed significant movements.
Orchid Pharma dropped nearly 9.7% after reporting weaker profits, while Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories declined around 2% following regulatory scrutiny.
Ahluwalia Contracts, Borosil and Jupiter Wagons also fell after their quarterly results disappointed investors.
On the positive side, PTC Industries gained about 3.9% following a strong increase in profit, while Hindustan Aeronautics rose around 2.2% after announcing a manufacturing partnership involving Adani Defence and BEML.
What Investors Will Watch Next
Market participants are likely to closely monitor developments in the Middle East, crude oil prices, foreign investment flows and the movement of the Indian rupee.
The rupee has also remained under pressure from higher oil prices and dollar demand, although the Reserve Bank of India has reportedly been active in the foreign exchange market to limit excessive volatility.
For Indian equities, a sustained rise in crude prices could remain a key risk in the near term, while any easing of geopolitical tensions could provide relief to investors.
