Several people were reportedly injured after five vehicles travelling as part of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s convoy collided with an ambulance on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, October 26, 2026. Rahul Gandhi was safe following the incident, according to reports.
The accident occurred near Haliyapur in Sultanpur district, approximately 100 kilometres from Lucknow. Police said the vehicles involved were travelling towards Sultanpur, where Gandhi was scheduled to appear before a special MP-MLA court in connection with a criminal defamation case.
According to preliminary information cited in media reports, a vehicle travelling ahead in the convoy suddenly applied its brakes, causing vehicles behind it to collide. Four private vehicles belonging to Congress leaders and an ambulance were reportedly involved in the incident.
The collision reportedly left several Congress workers and security personnel injured. Visuals from the accident site showed damage to the vehicles, including the front portion of a Scorpio SUV. Further details about the extent of the injuries were not immediately available.
Gandhi had arrived at Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow earlier in the day before travelling to Sultanpur. He was expected to attend the court proceedings concerning a 2018 defamation complaint linked to alleged remarks about Amit Shah, who was the BJP’s national president at the time.
The case was filed by BJP leader Vijay Mishra following Gandhi’s alleged remarks during the 2018 Karnataka Assembly election campaign. Gandhi travelled to Sultanpur to attend the pronouncement of the court’s verdict.
The circumstances surrounding the collision are being examined by the authorities. Despite the accident involving vehicles at the rear of the convoy, Gandhi himself was reported to be unharmed.
