In a dramatic political development, DMK leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin, was arrested from his residence in Chennai on Tuesday following a police case registered over his alleged remarks concerning actor Trisha during a public rally. The arrest has intensified political tensions in the state, with the DMK alleging political vendetta while rival parties have defended the police action.
According to reports, police arrived at Udhayanidhi Stalin’s home in Neelankarai early in the morning and took him into custody after an FIR was filed over comments he made during a rally in Thanjavur. The remarks, which were widely circulated on social media, were criticized as offensive and objectionable, prompting complaints from political opponents and women’s groups.
The controversy began during a public meeting centered on the Cauvery water dispute. During the event, slogans involving actor Trisha were reportedly raised by members of the crowd, following which Udhayanidhi allegedly made a double-entendre remark that sparked outrage. Critics accused him of making misogynistic comments, while his supporters argued that his words were taken out of context.
After his arrest, Udhayanidhi Stalin appeared composed and told reporters that he considered the action “a joke” and would challenge it through legal means. He maintained that the case against him was politically motivated and asserted that he had faith in the judicial process.
