Saudi Arabia intercepted a Houthi drone near Mecca on Tuesday, September 15, after the unmanned aircraft approached the holy city’s restricted airspace. Saudi authorities described the security threat as a serious escalation, while the Houthis denied that they had targeted Mecca.
The incident came amid a broader escalation between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement. Saudi Arabia has faced a series of drone and missile attacks, while its forces have intensified strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen. Security alerts were also issued in Mecca and Jeddah as tensions increased across the region.
The developments have put Pakistan under renewed pressure because Islamabad, along with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, signed a defence agreement in August. The pact has raised questions about whether Pakistan would provide military assistance if Saudi Arabia came under attack.
Pakistan’s Defence Minister said Islamabad remained bound by the agreement but indicated that he was unaware of any request from Riyadh for direct military intervention. Earlier, Pakistan had clarified that no military response under the agreement was currently being discussed.
Islamabad has condemned the reported threat to Mecca while maintaining a cautious position on direct involvement in the conflict. Pakistan’s approach reflects the difficulty of balancing its defence commitments to Saudi Arabia with its broader regional relationships, including its ties with Iran.
The situation has also prompted Saudi Arabia to seek additional security and intelligence cooperation. Reuters reported that Saudi authorities have emphasized that the protection of Mecca is a “red line,” while the Houthis have rejected Saudi accusations that they deliberately targeted the holy city.
The Mecca incident marks a significant escalation in the regional conflict because of the city’s religious importance. With fighting involving Saudi Arabia and the Houthis continuing, attention is now focused on how Riyadh’s allies, including Pakistan and Türkiye, respond to the growing security threat.
