Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the United States on Wednesday for a high-profile state visit, receiving an unusual personal welcome from US President Donald Trump at Joint Base Andrews near Washington.
Trump and First Lady Melania Trump greeted Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, on the tarmac as the Chinese delegation arrived. The welcome featured a military band, a 21-gun salute, a red carpet and a military flyover, underscoring the ceremonial importance of Xi’s visit.
Trump’s decision to personally receive Xi at the airport marked a departure from recent diplomatic practice. US presidents generally welcome visiting foreign leaders at the White House rather than meeting them at Joint Base Andrews. Xi’s arrival marked his first state visit to Washington in more than a decade.
The three-day visit is expected to focus on several sensitive areas of US-China relations, including trade, tariffs, artificial intelligence, rare-earth minerals, technology restrictions, Taiwan and broader geopolitical issues. Discussions are also taking place against the backdrop of efforts by Washington and Beijing to manage tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
Xi said after his arrival that China and the United States should be partners rather than rivals. He expressed support for building a stable relationship featuring cooperation, manageable differences and continued engagement between the two countries.
The formal talks between Trump and Xi are scheduled to take place at the White House. The visit will also include a state dinner hosted by Trump and Melania Trump, along with other ceremonial engagements.
While the elaborate welcome signals the importance both governments place on the relationship, major differences remain on trade, technology, Taiwan and strategic competition. The talks will provide an opportunity for both sides to address those disputes while exploring areas where cooperation may be possible.
