Johnson announces new taskforce to find promising new medicines

London, April 21 (UiTV/IANS) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday announced a new taskforce to find "promising new medicines" to treat coronavirus.

Under the government plans, Britons who test positive for Covid-19 or are exposed to the virus could be sent antiviral tablets or capsules, to take at home as early as autumn this year, Xinhua news agency reported.

"The success of our vaccination program has demonstrated what the UK can achieve when we bring together our brightest minds," the prime minister said at a Downing Street press briefing.

Telangana: Roads go deserted as night curfew comes into force

Hyderabad, April 20 (UiTV/IANS) - Roads in Hyderabad and the rest of Telangana wore deserted look on Tuesday night as the night curfew came into force to contain the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.

The usual hustle bustle on main thoroughfares in Hyderabad was missing while police personnel set up check posts to restrict the movement of people.

Shops and business establishments were closed down at 8 p.m. as per the Government Order (GO) issued earlier in the day while movement of people was stopped from 9 p.m.

China to produce over 3 bn Covid vax this year

Beijing, April 21 (UiTV/IANS) - China is expected to produce more than 3 billion Covid-19 vaccine doses this year, an official said on Tuesday.

The country's current production capacity is around 5 billion vaccine doses annually, said Zheng Zhongwei, head of the working group for vaccine development under the State Council joint prevention and control mechanism against Covid-19, Xinhua news agency reported.

Speaking at a sub-forum of the Boao Forum for Asia annual conference, Zheng said that, when the outbreak happened, China immediately focused on research and development for a Covid-19 vaccine.

Usha Rao-Monari appointed UN Under Secretary General

United Nations, Feb 18 (UITV/IANS) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed investment professional Usha Rao-Monari as an Under Secretary General and the associate administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

The announcement on Wednesday said that she has over 30 years of investment experience in infrastructure and is a senior adviser with investment company Blackstone's Infrastructure Group.

The UNDP is the main UN organisation to promote the UN's development agenda with international cooperation. With a budget of about $3 billion, it works in around 170 countries and territories on eradicating poverty and reducing inequalities.

Rao-Monari, a Delhi University graduate with a master's degree from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management, Mumbai, has been the CEO of Global Water Development Partners.

She also was the director of the Sustainable Business Advisory Group at the World Bank's International Finance Corporation.

She also holds a master's degree in International Affairs and Finance from Columbia University.

"Every year, I keep the nine-day long fast. But the time passes very fast without any trouble. As I stay busy whole day working. But now when I have to be at home every hour makes me feel hungry. However, I consume fresh fruit and juices but affording them is another challenge looking to their price.
